If you love air-cooled Porsche 911s but also are interested in something with true motorsports heritage, this 1997 Porsche 911 3.8 RSR is absolutely perfect. As the first 1995 993 Cup 3.8 to be delivered to the United States as a permanent resident of this country, it’s actually one of the final air-cooled 993 RS factory-built Cup models out there. The first owner used it in Porsche Club Amateur races only, while all the upgrades were installed by Porsche Motorsports North America.

This car is unique in a number of ways. For starters, it’s the only 1995 Cup Car to have the 3.8 RSR engine, also called the M64/70, which has cylinder heads containing two valves per cylinder, unique camshafts, and a different intake system. This car has had other upgrades installed, like RSR suspension and bodywork, all installed by the factory and not a shop. Later, the car received EVO bodywork and a slide valve induction system, but the old induction system has been retained.

With only two owners for this car, which has never been used in a professional race, you’re getting a well-maintained high-performance racer. It’s also never been crashed, another big plus. Full documentation of this car will be included in the sale, which is being facilitated by Atlantis Motor Group. That includes the initial request to buy the car, sent by the owner in 1994, and all maintenance documents. This Porsche has been featured in Excellence Magazine with its full backstory, and it was referred to in the Adrian Streather’s book The Essential 993.

Finding another 993 Cup car is going to be difficult. From 1994 to 1998, it’s estimated about 374 were made. Experts believe the majority of those cars were either crashed or otherwise damaged and written off, with many of the survivors modified so they no longer match the factory configuration, unlike this one.
