Maybe you’ve always dreamed of having a real classic American car in your garage but thought one would be out of reach. This 1928 Chevrolet National Model AB Phaeton was built before the Great Depression, so it has plenty of historical cache. It also is surprisingly affordable and yet is in excellent condition. This rare opportunity is one that won’t stick around forever.
To say the National AB is an important car in Chevrolet’s history would actually be an understatement. Debuting right at the start of 1928, it was created to go toe-to-toe with the Ford Model A, which had been dominating the market since its release.
This Chevy was outfitted to really sock it to the Model A. Sleek looks, four-wheel brakes, a longer wheelbase, and improved headlights versus its predecessor, there was a lot for car shoppers to like about it.
As you can clearly see in the photographs, the green and black exterior of this Chevy has been polished to near perfection. In a pinch you could probably use the body panels or fenders as a mirror, thanks to a glossiness that anyone can admire. Period-correct details abound, from the dark green wheels to the decorative radiator cap. In poorer weather you can put up the convertible top for this phaeton, which is obviously newer and in fantastic condition.
Competitive for its time, the correct 171ci 4-cylinder engine runs well. It pairs up with a manual transmission, so you get that immersive classic driving experience each and every time you get behind the wheel. Lift open the engine cowling and you’ll reveal a shockingly clean and presentable area, almost looking as good as the car’s exterior.
While nothing fancy, the interior is clean and in wonderful shape. Black upholstery and carpeting are both in good repair and look to be relatively new. There’s a period-correct steering wheel and gauges, preserving the look and feel of this classic.
