Own This Rare 1968 Ford Mustang 428 Cobra Jet Tasca Lightweight

Any Mustang enthusiast that also favors drag racing is probably familiar with the name Bob Tasca. An avid racer in the '60s, Tasca was always pushing the envelope when building his Ford cars to dominate the quarter mile. Even more, he owned the second largest Ford dealership in the world during this same time. The 1968 Ford Mustang 428 Cobra Jet Tasca Lightweight was Tasca's idea to offer a more performance-oriented Mustang, and it became the predecessor to Ford's factory Cobra Jet. Only 50 of these Tasca Lightweights were built. GT Motor Cars is excited to offer the opportunity to add this rare and restored slice of American muscle to your garage. This fully restored example has less than 53,000 miles on the clock and retains its original interior.

Tasca was unhappy with the Ford 390cui engine, so he decided to take matters into his own hands. Using his "KR-8" test car stuffed with a Police Interceptor 428cui V8 engine, Tasca started browing the Ford Parts catalog to see what he could throw at it. Working with engine builder John Healey, they equipped it with 406 heads, a GT390 camshaft, and other things easily found at any dealership. This car shifts power down to the rear wheels via a 4-speed manual transmission. 

Ford delivered 5 Wimbledon White fastbacks in lightweight trim to the NHRA Winternationals to compete in the Super Stock class. Stuffed with the 428cui and given plenty of Tasca modifications, the car was a force to be reckoned with.

To prove the car's reliability, Tasca drove his first test car all the way from his home in Rhode island to Ford's headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan. Interested in what he grilled up, Ford offered the 428 Cobra Jet the following year.

This particular 1968 Mustang Cobra Jet lightweight has belonged to two separate muscle car collections. The first was the Colin Comer collection, and after that it was purchased by another collector who gave it a full rotisserie restoration with all receipts. All documentation is included with the car including the Deluxe Marti Report, full ownership history, previous registrations, all restoration receipts, and Ford Certificate of Origin.
