James Hetfield Opens Up Garage For Book

Set to be released on May 5, 2020, Reclaimed Rust: The Four-Wheeled Creations Of James Hetfield is a book that will give you a tour of James Hetfield’s incredible car collection. The book looks at the musician’s extensive restored and highly customized classic cars.

Insight, publisher of Metallica book, Back to Front, had this to say about Hetfield’s passion, “Millions know James Hetfield as the front man of Metallica, but the acclaimed singer-songwriter has enjoyed another lifelong passion: restoring and customizing classic cars into magnificent pieces of automotive art.”

Best known as the front-man for the band Metallica, the singer-songwriter-guitar player has enjoyed restoring and customizing cars as another one of his little known life passions. His collection is anything but ordinary, and is described as being full of automotive art. The cars that have inspired Hetfield’s passion include re-imagined classics that are being examined for the first time in the public eye with dynamic photography that offers insights into the cars’ creations.

As we reported back in August, Hetfield donated a few of his customs to put on display at the Petersen Museum. The ten car exhibit includes builds like the 1948 Jaguar “Black Pearl” and the 1937 Lincoln Zephyr “Voodoo Priest.”

James Hetfield once said of his passion, “Building cars is always an escape. It’s the same with music. I don’t know what I’m gonna make. Cars are like people to me; they like love. They love to be touched, they love to be handled, they love to be driven… they love to be admired…’
“This is a form of expression and freedom, and you can get away with driving something like that but still have your personality show through.’

“It’s just like looking at art. You look at a piece and you go, ‘I don’t get it.’ And you look at something else and say, ‘That is amazing. I wish I thought of that.”
